A plastic bag may be referred to a bag which is made up of thin and flexible plastic sheet. The main use of these plastic bags is to store waste and to dispose it off. They can even be made to store other non-wastes too also.

There are four different types of plastic bags which are used nowadays. They are the high density polyethylene also known as HDPE, Low density polyethylene known as LDPE, degradable plastic bags and compostable plastic bags.

Plastic bags are now available in different colors and size. Even translucent and transparent plastic bags are available. Plastic bags usually have shape like two similar rectangular plastic sheets fused together on three sides and one end left open.

The advantages of the plastic bags are that they are durable, strong, light weight and need lesser energy for producing it when compared to paper bags and cardboard boxes.

It is even stated that the plastics require very less energy for production as well as for recycling.

Mostly it is a common procedure to discard plastic bags after a single use. Recycling of the plastic bags can be done but these bags are recycled very rarely. It would be really surprising to know that only 0.5% of plastic bags are recycled.

A disadvantage of plastic bags is that they take almost 500 to 1000 years to decompose. These figures are not accurate as plastics have not been existed for so long to calculate the decomposition timing.
